Teacher Development for MTs English Language Teachers

ELTIS aims to commence training for up to 500 MTs English language teachers during Stage 1 implementation. ELTIS will work in three districts in East Java (Situbondo, Bondowoso and Probolinggo) and three districts in Mataram (Mataram City, West and Central Lombok), working directly with MTs English language teachers.

English Language Upgrading Courses

The English Language Upgrading (ELU) courses, delivered by the ELTIS Training Team with support from the ELTIS ELT Specialist, will commence in January 2008 at IAIN Surabaya and February 2008 at IAIN Mataram. Following extensive placement testing, the teachers will join ELU courses at one of four levels:

• Elementary
• High Elementary
• Pre-Intermediate
• Intermediate

Each level consists of a two-week (60 hour) intensive English language course followed by an 8-week home study module.

Communicative English Language Teacher Training Courses

After completing the ELU courses, the MTs teachers will join Communicative English Language Teacher Training (CELTT) courses. The CELTT course comprises five individual modules which will be delivered using an intensive face-to-face model over 4 days, followed by a four-week period of practical tasks to be implemented by teachers in their own MTs classrooms, under the guidance of the Master Teacher Trainers, the ISA and Regional Coordinators. These tasks will involve a range of skills designed to encourage them to reflect on and apply the new teaching techniques and strategies introduced during the intensive study module.

The five CELTT modules cover:

• Module 1 — Principles of Communicative English Language Teaching
• Module 2 — Lesson Planning and Classroom Management
• Module 3 — Teaching Listening and Reading
• Module 4 — Teaching Speaking and Writing
• Module 5 — Teaching Grammar and Vocabulary
