Placement Testing and Needs Analysis Interviews
East Java
24 – 28 September 2007

The ELTIS team visited East Java between 24 – 28 September 2007 to conduct follow-up placement testing and needs analysis interviews among MTs English language teachers. The team comprised Caroline Bentley, ELTIS Team Leader, Putu Sudiani, ELTIS Coordinator, Sholikin, ELTIS Islamic Schools Specialist and Lusvita Fitriyanti from IALF Surabaya. The team tested 235 teachers in three districts: Probolinggo, Bondowoso and Situbondo, bringing the total number of teachers tested in East Java and NTB to 723.

The placement tests were facilitated by the Religious Affairs office staff in the three districts and included teachers from both the MAPENDA and Pondok Pesantren sectors.

After a short presentation to give the teachers an overview of the aims and objectives of ELTIS, the MTs teachers were given a Multiple Choice written test to complete, followed by a 10-minute oral interview in English. They were then asked to complete a comprehensive Needs Analysis questionnaire which will provide ELTIS with important data regarding their current teaching situation, the materials and activities they use in class and their school facilities.

Over the next few months, the data collected will be used to assign the MTs teachers to English Language Upgrading classes, which they will commence in January 2008 at IAIN Sunan Ampel in Surabaya.

At the end of November 2007, ELTIS will hold one-day workshops for School Principals, Foundation Leaders and School Committee members to inform them about the important work ELTIS is doing and gain their commitment to release their English teachers to attend the ELTIS training programs.

The ELTIS team will be traveling to Lombok in early November 2007 to conduct follow-up placement testing in Mataram, West and Central Lombok.
